What layer do components reside on, in an assembly, when they are brought in using Original Layer?

What layer do components reside on, in an assembly, when they are brought in using Original Layer?

Hi,

Simple question; just wondering if there's a command, or display, that tells you what layer a component is on, after it's brought into an assembly using the "Original" layer option?

Usually I open Layer Settings, start selecting components then watch the layers as they highlight, but I'm guessing there's another, more straight forward, way.

Displayable entities in the reference set (bodies, curves, etc) will be placed on the same layer as the part that defines them. You can use menu -> information -> object to directly find the layer an object resides on.

In the Assembly Navigator can enable a Column which will indicate the Layer that the Component is on.

Thanks guys,

I was hoping for something quicker/simpler than the way I have been doing, as mentioned above: Layer Settings -> select component(s).`
Something to note about the way I've been doing it is, you can make multiple selections and identify different layers quickly - which is nice.

Information -> Object method lets you select multiple components but, unfortunately for reviewing layers, the information isn't grouped and you have to do a lot of scrolling - still good to know.

Something like, what John mentioned, a displayable column in the Assembly Navigator would be perfect - easy to see and can be sorted...
However, John unless you were talking about another column, the "Layer" column shows the word "Original," when the components are set as such.
Is that the one you were referring to?

RE: What layer do components reside on, in an assembly, when they are brought in using Original Layer?

We have a set of standards where make details are on a specific group of layers and standard components are on another group of layers etc... When I get an assembly that has any components on "Original Layer" I automatically just move them to the layer they belong.

Can I ask if there is a reason you leave them at Original Layer?

Hi Kenja824,

Thanks for responding.

No reason, that I know of, other than this is maybe an out of the box setting?

I personally don't like adding components using the original layers setting because you don't know, without a little digging, what layer objects reside on.

I do the same as you and I explicitly move them to layers that make sense, within each and ever file. However, the rub is with legacy files. Everyone at this company is leaving components on original layers and I don't want to start moving them around because it could cause problems with drawing views that are using Layer Visible in View settings. Now, if I could easily see what layers all the components are on, at one time, it would then be easy for re-arrange layers without taking a lot of time and causing errors.

RE: What layer do components reside on, in an assembly, when they are brought in using Original Layer?

If you want to know only the layer of an object, the fastest method is "Ctrl+L" ( will open the Layer settings dialog) then pick an object. ( one at at time) the corresponding layer will then be highlighted in the layer list. You can continue selecting. As long as the last selection uses the same layer, nothing will happen in the layer dialog, but if ... etc.

Toost - thank you.

I was hoping for another way to view/sort but it doesn't appear to be one.

Seems like it would makes sense that the Layer column only shows the actual layer for a given component and another column, like Information (or whatever) shows whether or not that's an Original layer.

Anyway, maybe an enhancement request...

Thanks again!
