Allowable vibration on pipelines

Allowable vibration on pipelines

Allowable vibration on pipelines

(OP)
Dear All,

Is there a way to calculate the allowable vibration on a pipeline based on its size, material, etc.?

Thank you,

Andres

RE: Allowable vibration on pipelines

and contents and loads, etc? Yes, but normally it isn't necessary, as pipelines are buried and usually free of damaging vibration and fatigue effects. Some pipes in compressor or pump stations and other locations where pipe is above gound and some offshore pipelines that are not buried is where possible vibration problems might strike. How to do vibration calculations depend on what type of loads are driving the vibrations and damping effects of the environment immediately surrounding the pipe. Waves, wind, currents, compressor effects, flow rate resonance and highway traffic effects vary. The structural dynamic topic of vibrations of beams under dynamic loading conditions are your best source for general info. Pipeline design codes specify vibration fatigue limits.

Reaction to change doesn't stop it smile

RE: Allowable vibration on pipelines

The vibration amplitudes can be estimated using the details of the pipe, its layout, pipe anchors, and the sources of forcing. That is the focus of pipe stress analysis, especially the dynamic portion.

There are references and texts a plenty, but no quick answers.
