URGENT - Concrete Pile Reinforcement Design

URGENT - Concrete Pile Reinforcement Design

URGENT - Concrete Pile Reinforcement Design

(OP)
Hi all.

I am designing a concrete pile which is supporting a steel frame, the Moment on the pile due to earthquake force is 15kN/m and the Axial force is 38kN.

I have designed the pile on soil in NZ which has density of 13kg/m^3 bit I am finding it difficult to design the reinforcement in the Pile. I come up with a minimum reinforcement of 8-HD 16's but how do I account for the moment and axial?

RE: URGENT - Concrete Pile Reinforcement Design

Effectively, you design it like a column with interaction of compression and bending.

If you have more specific questions, go ahead and ask. If you don't really know how to begin approaching the problem, then you shouldn't be the person in charge of this task.

Also, that soil density doesn't really make any sense and your units for moment aren't correct.

Sorry i was in a rush, soil density if 13kN/m^3 and moment is 15kN*m.

How do i account for the soil if I am doing this as a column. Not sure what value of spring constant I should adopt?

RE: URGENT - Concrete Pile Reinforcement Design

Soil forces on piles are usually accounted for by geotechs using programs like L-Pile in my area. Then we get the forces and design it like a braced column unless there is some reason not to such as soil that can't be counted on to brace it or liquefaction potential.

RE: URGENT - Concrete Pile Reinforcement Design

You need to have a geotech involved. I would never take on a pile project without a geotech providing me expert guidance on what loads I can put into the soil.

as TLHS said, design it like a concrete column.

Some good background info here: Link

That said, I'd be seeking geotechnical help for the final design for sure.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

Thanks everyone for your help on this...definitely getting our geotech engineer to take a look at this and provide me with the relevant constants.

Beauty108,

Just a note on the wording of your Topic - putting URGENT in it will not help, and might get it deleted.

People answering questions on this site do so on their own time and will reply when they can. Have some respect for those you are asking for help! If it is URGENT, ask your mentor who is paid to help you!

Requesting an URGENT response is a no-no!

@rapt, did you really need to post anything????!!! This is a forum and I am asking what i am unsure of. People are being helpful and are responding and here you are guiding me to supreme engineering ethics!!
Besides why bother when the issue was already sorted! Spoiler!

RE: URGENT - Concrete Pile Reinforcement Design

Beauty,
Rapt was just giving you a bit of good advice. The use of the word urgent on this site, and anything in all caps, usually has the opposite effect, and can often result in your post being removed if someone objects. Just a lesson in good manners, a concept which seems to be in short supply nowadays.

Since you are a new member, welcome, and you are forgiven...this time.

Ahh well guess you guys are only tryna guide me so...u r also forgiven for making a newby terrified :) also reckon this forum should forward new users with rules and guidelines before allowing to post threads!

RE: URGENT - Concrete Pile Reinforcement Design

There are some posting guidelines. See the link below. Not everything is covered, but there are enough of us pedants to keep folks on track, if they listen.

Sweet!

RE: URGENT - Concrete Pile Reinforcement Design

I recently posted a note that there could be an 'Urgent' button on threads, and got thoroughly trounced (I'm still hurting); it was a really dumb idea. Don't feel bad... and welcome to the group. There's some really good advice given here.
