reviewing/stamping calculations done by others

reviewing/stamping calculations done by others

my company has another office in another state. their only civil engineer left. he stamped the drawings but not the calculations before he left.
the city/jurisdiction where the project is located hired a private third party inspector to review the drawings and calculations.
i'm guessing the city doesn't have in-house inspector on payroll.
this third party inspector commented to have the calculation stamped as well.
i was asked to review the calculation and make correction, if any, and stamp it.

this is ok, no?

the drawings and calculations will have different PE stamp. is this still ok?

RE: reviewing/stamping calculations done by others

From a technical perspective I see nothing wrong with it since a professional has taken responsibility for the drawings and calculations. From a legal perspective, I am not sure if those have to be the same person but you should check your local requirements. My guess is that it would have to be the same person, so that there is a single point of responsibility. If something went wrong, could you sue the person who sealed the calcs but not the drawings? Not likely.

RE: reviewing/stamping calculations done by others

From a legal standpoint, I don't think that this is an issue in most jurisdictions. As for getting sued, if something in the project goes downhill everybody related to it is getting sued anyway, so having different names doesn't affect that. It only adds another name and number to the program. If you truly and carefully review the work, and are comfortable with the ultimate outcome (whether edited or not), then stamp away.

I agree that everyone will get dragged into it. But if there are two engineer seals, who is the EOR and how do you indicate that on project documents? Maybe its a case of semantics, but I have not heard of ENGINEERS of record.

RE: reviewing/stamping calculations done by others

There should not be two engineers for the same things.

I would say at this point you would have to completely review and re-check all the calculations and plans, verifying them fully and sign/seal both.

Alternatively, find the original engineer and ask (pay?) them to seal their own calculations as a matter of course. They produced them after all.
