Cracks in RC buildings
Cracks in RC buildings
(OP)
Hi, is any good reference for checking the causes of cracking in RC buildings? I have a building with shallow foundations on rock. However, the client thinks that these cracks were caused because of excessive settlement. We were not the geotech of this building, but knowing the area and considering that the building is supported on rock, I do not think that it should be settlement issues. The building is a 3 story office building. If you can recommend any references about how recognize the causes of cracking in buildings, it will be appreciated. Thanks !

MotorCity, I am located in Japan and checking for Euclid in Google, appears that they do not have offices in here. Anyways, thanks for the reference. Will try to look if these presentations are available in internet.

"Structural Appraisal of Traditional Buildings" by Patrick Robson also has some useful info on cracks.
You could also consider getting a geotech involved. Good luck!

There are a few good forensic books out there as well that tackle settlement cracking in general as opposed to just for RC buildings.
I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
