Dear All,
As per ASME SEC VIII DIV-I Table UCS 56-1 General Notes (b)(2), For weld joints over 32mm nominal thickness to 38mm nominal thickness unless preheat is applied at a minimum temperature of 95 degree Celsius during welding. This preheat is not be applied to SA841 grades A and B provided that the carbon content and carbon equivalent(CE) for plate material, by heat analysis do not exceed 0.14% and 0.40%

Is this statement can be applied to all material (for example SA516 Grade 55,60,65 and 70)?

RE: Preheat Requirement

Correct. Applies to P-1 material.

RE: Preheat Requirement

(OP)
for example i was consider the plate material is SA-516 Gr70. so, what is the maximum limitation of Carbon equivalent(CE) value. 0.14% or 0.40%

RE: Preheat Requirement

For P-1 material between 32mm and 38mm thick, the exemption on preheat only applies to SA-841 Grades A and B. i.e. for SA-516 Gr70 (and other SA-516 grades) in this thickness range, you would need to postweld heat treat unless you undertake preheat to 95oC during welding.

Thank you Mr.JohnGP.
