Ganged Studs Attachment to Steel Beams at Composite Floor Deck Podium Structure

Ganged Studs Attachment to Steel Beams at Composite Floor Deck Podium Structure

Ganged Studs Attachment to Steel Beams at Composite Floor Deck Podium Structure

(OP)
I have project that has a steel-framed 2nd floor with a 5.5" thick (total) composite concrete deck, followed by 2 or 3 stories of wood stud wall framing above the steel level. I've aligned all of my steel beams under the load-bearing wood walls. However, I am trying to figure out the best method of attachment for the ganged stud members that I am using as chords for shear walls.

Obviously, it is a significant tension/uplift force that I would ideally like to transfer directly to the steel beam. Anyone have any suggestions or standard details that they have used before for this type of construction??

Simpson strong-tie has many holddown connectors that you could use by bolting directly to the steel beam.

Could you use the weldable cages from Simpson? Link I believe these are for their ATS systems but could possibly work with conventional hold downs.

For my steel podium projects, I use a long threaded stud, or worst case, something similar to the Simpson cage formed out of vertical steel plates and a vertical piece of HSS 3x1 with a plate washer below. With the threaded stud, they just grab the stud with a coupler. It doesn't need to stick out past the slab but a few inches.

I would use a Simpson hold down connector, but instead of bolting the threaded rod to the beam, I would weld it to the top flange.

Thanks for the responses. I think I am going try the threaded rod welded to the top flange of the steel beams. I'll make the general contractor submit a plan of the ganged stud anchor locations. It will be a pain for steel supplier to deal with in the shop drawing phase, but it needs to be done.
