How to define inputs for a product template

How to define inputs for a product template

How to define inputs for a product template

(OP)
Good morning,

I need to define some inputs for a product template, mainly the axis and the plane on which the instantiated product will be constrained.I will instantiate this product (flange with bolts, nuts and spring washers) in another big assembly that contains some sheet metal and other parts.

I saw some videos on youtube on this matter, but i still don't know how to define the inputs for the constraint: one coincidence between axes and one surface contact between the mating faces.

Do you have any ideas regarding this ?

Best regards,
Costin Ruja

Can you chow an example of that?
It can be from an youtube video.

I never use like this. I always had used for powercopies. But like you, i would like to know how to do.

Right now it works like a charm as it is, just instantiating the template in a bigger assembly. Yesterday I timed some operations and using it like this gives me about 5x faster times. But with Catia you want more and more :D If I just could constrain it from the beginning it would be perfect.

RE: How to define inputs for a product template

Hello,

PKT is not that easy to explain. My recommendation is to get a teacher (1-2 day(s) class assuming you know all there is to know about PowerCopy and UDF) or to try to follow the on-line documentation if you are experienced enough on-line documentation.

Good luck,
Calin

RE: How to define inputs for a product template

How do you do it in an assembly? Can you show it in a simple one? I'm curious, because I don't know how to do it...

I already use powercopy and part template for some other parts. I managed to fill in the inputs for the PART template and works quite nicely, but I will have to study further how this can be achieved for products.

Tiago, do you mean the way I am using it right now ?

RE: How to define inputs for a product template

yes, if possible. Because I never used it. And beeing honest I didn't knew that this it was possible. I have just used powercopies, for insert features in parts.

It works almost like the powercopy function.

From what I know you need the PKT license, but I'll have to ask.

You can save this template in a catalog just like any powercopy or UDF and then instantiate it in a bigger product.

You have the option to select it you want a new product or same document for the parts involved and the assembly. Because the standard stuff (nuts, bolts...) are stored in another catalogue and resolved in a archive folder on the disk, i don't need new parts for these.

You can see in the image above I have a template for screw, washer, grower washer and nut. Whenever I have to bolt some stuff together, like 2 flanges, in just click on catalogue and select the product template. It automatically inserts a product which then I have to save in the location of my project.

RE: How to define inputs for a product template

where do you run that command to create it?

In product knowledge template workbench you have the same icons as in part (powercopy, UDF)

I don't have the 2 buttons that you are saying, problaby i don't have the required license. But i believe that I can instantiate it. If it is not asking much, is possible for you to send me a small assembly where you have created the knowledge template to see if it's possible to instantiate in my license? if it works maybe I can ask my boss to buy a PKT license for a power user to create those templates, and then the other users uses that templates.

We are using skeletons at our company for about 8 years. This works very nicely for us but the holly grail would be instantiating product templates with inputs, as i showed earlier. Some inputs to constrain the instantiated assembly and then some other inputs for the parts inside the assembly. We have quite simple assemblies (<100 parts) and I could technically rebuild these small assemblies in 15-20 mouse clicks. I still hope that I don't need the business process knowledge template license. The guy in the youtube video a few posts back uses it extensivelly.

Thank you by your files. I have tested it i'm able to open it, but I didn't found the inputs...

That is my problem also, I don't know how to make the inputs. Right now I am using it as it is, like in the image below

The template that i have sent you is saved in a catalog. When in assembly workbench, you just open the catalog and browse to the desired template. It then positions the instantiated product at (0,0,0) and I have to constrain it by hand in the big assembly.

Ferdo, it is alright with me. Actually I tend to get a little nervous about stuff that seems simple on youtube and is actually complicated, so I am looking forward to find out how this is done.

Spot on, another fine example of product template.

RE: How to define inputs for a product template

To get the inputs, you simply select the inputs you need out of the tree. If the product assembly is built correctly, by defining new inputs upon intstantion, the product will re-define itself on the inputs given. Typically, a min. is a point/plane/line, that and the entire assembly will need to tie back to these inputs when creating it
