WELD LEG SIZE ( fillet weld)
WELD LEG SIZE ( fillet weld)
(OP)
Hi Guys.
Anybody please enlighten me we this build up beam welding by submerged arc welding Web thickness is 16 mm flange thickness 20mm, weld dimension leg size 20mm
now my question is it still acceptable for that kind of weld leg size, which is already over the thickness of the web thickness dimension, as it fall in the AWS CODE should not more than the weld size of the base material thickness,
Thank you...

RE: WELD LEG SIZE ( fillet weld)
A weld that is larger than required will reduce the unit stress. That isn't usually considered to be a bad thing. However, welds that are excessively large may result in excessive distortion and in the case of thick sections, result in lamellar tearing if the member is loaded in the through thickness direction. One must not overlook the residual stresses, not only the applied load. And of course, one must not forget there is a cost involved to produce a weld, as the size of the fillet doubles, the volume increases to the square of the leg dimension. Double the size, the cost is roughly four times higher.
