ASME B16.9 Caps length

ASME B16.9 Caps length

ASME B16.9 Caps length

(OP)
Hi togehther,
My question is about the length E1 of the caps acc. B16.9 which applies if you have a higher wall thicknes.

For example 12" sch.100 (323,8 x 21,44)
Normal length 152mm, but now it is 178mm.

Could you please tell me why it is like that?
We want to turn the cap out of a round bar with a lathe.

Thanks from Germany

RE: ASME B16.9 Caps length

I don't know why they are different, but I urge caution using bar material at that diameter...

ASME VIII-1 for example limits the size of cylindrical pressure containing parts made from bar to NPS4 (DN100).

Cheers,
Marty

RE: ASME B16.9 Caps length

gerry23,
Turning a weld cap out of a bar is not a clever thing to do. The material grain pattern of a forged cap is completely different to a cap machined from a bar. Suggest you are proposing to manufacture a projectile!!!

RE: ASME B16.9 Caps length

Why is it longer? Probably to do with manufacturing issues and change of the internal radius associated with a thicker cap.

Agree that the dimensions of 16.9 only apply to wrought fittings.

note this part of 16.9

The term wrought denotes fittings made of pipe, tubing,
plate, or forgings. Fittings made from block forgings
may only be supplied subject to agreement between the
manufacturer and purchaser.

Looks to me like "bar" is the same as block forging....

why are you trying to make this out of bar??

Thanks for your answers...and your care =)
The round bar is a forged one, A182 F9.

Does it make it better know?
I'm not a expert in ASME.
Normaly we turn and mill special sized fittings acc. EN 10253, 1092 and so on.

Our customer is ok with our manufacturing methods.

RE: ASME B16.9 Caps length

What code covers what this will be used for?
