Joist Hanger using 1-1/4" Rim Joist as a Header

Joist Hanger using 1-1/4" Rim Joist as a Header

(OP)
I am designing connection above a wall where 2 different types of joists meet above the wall (as seen in pdf). The TJI's coming in from the left will bear on the wall itself and butt up to a Rim Joist, I need a joist hanger to hold up the 2x8's that frame in on the other side of the Rim Joist. I have called out a Simpson LUS26 hanger that can use 10d x 1-1/2" nails, but the Rim joist is only 1-1/4" thick. Any ideas on how I can frame these 2x8s onto the rim joist?? PLEASE SEE ATTACHED PDF

RE: Joist Hanger using 1-1/4" Rim Joist as a Header

Use LVL for the Rim.

RE: Joist Hanger using 1-1/4" Rim Joist as a Header

Use a wider rim joist or provide blocking between the TJI joists.

You could also through bolt a ledger to the rimboard and provide nailing from the hangers into the ledger.

Call simpson. Quite often they've got reduction factors for situations like this.

Thanks for the responses, I went with the LVL.

Simpson has a technical bulletin about this. Their website directs to here for the current version: https://embed.widencdn.net/pdf/plus/ssttoolbox/a3v...
Per this bulletin, you can use LUS hangers on rim board by taking 0.84 of the tabulated capacity.

RE: Joist Hanger using 1-1/4" Rim Joist as a Header

Note alot of the hangers require clinched nails with the narrow rimboard in order to achieve these values.

RE: Joist Hanger using 1-1/4" Rim Joist as a Header

It's a pretty rare situation where you would load a 2x8 joist more than a hanger with a nail in every hole will carry, even nailed into 3/4" plywood, never mind something heavier. Forget the cya calculations, go ahead & test it. Remember, in the end it's the real world you're dealing with.

RE: Joist Hanger using 1-1/4" Rim Joist as a Header

Yeah don't exceed Simpson allowable values unless you want to get skewered by lawyers if something goes wrong. You'd be on a very lonely island.
