Hello Engineer,

Help me to choose an appropriate diameter of bars in column for a 10 story+1 basement concrete building.Which f'c is 3000 psi.

I prefer this (http://imgur.com/a/5NsUE) ,whats your opinion? Is it OK??

Thanks in advanced all.

RE: Help me to choose appropriate diameter of bars in column.

30 bars in a 24" diameter column? that's a ton of steel and they end up essentially 3" o/c around the perimeter. I'd be increasing the size of the bars to 25 or 30m bars to cut down the number of them.

RE: Help me to choose appropriate diameter of bars in column.

You are designing a column for a 10 story building, and you are asking an online community to select the bars in your column?? Not only is there not enough information provided, but I find it very disturbing that rather than relying on structural theory and technical expertise, you solicit an online audience to design/check the column for you for a rather significant size structure.

RE: Help me to choose appropriate diameter of bars in column.

3000 psi is a very low strength for columns today. If you can increase f'c, the reinforcement can be reduced.

jayrod12 I need your opinion to adjustment steel diameter
Motorcity you are right,Its my first design,I have done this design by manual calculation. My senior structural engineer will check as soon as possible. As because I am new comer in design,I need just your help.If your have best suggestion you can share with me.Is there any rule that where I can use 20 mm dia bar or 25 mm dia bar?Or is there any formula that the bar amount exceed then I must replace smaller diameter bar and use larger diameter bar?

RE: Help me to choose appropriate diameter of bars in column.

Most of us older folks started out doing the drawings for jobs like this and any design was worked out under the direct supervision of an experienced professional. Just because it is easier to bring up some computer program or try this group, you are doing yourself no good in the long run. This is the wrong place for such a question anyhow, since we do not do your design for you.

RE: Help me to choose appropriate diameter of bars in column.

I gave you my opinion. You as the design professional must put your own thought into it. Any one capable of performing the design would be able to determine an appropriate alternative size and number of bars.
