mixing sand with caustic soda

mixing sand with caustic soda

(OP)
Hi,

What is the reason that we cant manufacture Sodium Silicate by mixing sand with caustic soda as sand is majorly silica. Current process of manufacturing is fusing sand with sodium carbonate to make silica and then mixing it with caustic to make sodium silicate.

RE: mixing sand with caustic soda

This is already done in what i believe might be called a hydrothermal glass process.
When using the conventional process with sodium carbonate the caustic step is only used for certain types of glass.
The link below might help.
