Circular Ties in Auger Cast in Place Piles per ACI 318-14 25.7.2.4.1
Has anyone come across documentation justifying the use of lap splices in circular ties over the hooked ends detail described in ACI 318-14 25.7.2.4.1?
Per the code, circular ties need to have a minimum overlap of 6” and each end needs to terminate with a standard hook around a vertical bar. This seems to be a valid choice in heavy compression loaded columns where vertical reinforcement is acting as compression reinforcement. However if one is to use this circular tie detail in auger cast piles of 18” diameter or less, the hooked ends of the ties congest the center of the cage to where running a center bar through the middle with a spacer “football” becomes very difficult.
I have not found an exclusion/exception to the tie detail. This would leave spiral ties as the only viable tie method. Typically our pile designs only need vertical bars for flexural reinforcement in the top 25 ft or so and the shear loads are half the concrete capacity. So the circular ties are mainly for holding the vertical bars in place for casting.
