Corner Gusset Effects

Corner Gusset Effects

Corner Gusset Effects

(OP)
In the scenario shown (follow link below), is there a simple way to determine how the gusset affects the load path. Assume that both angles are 45º (or it would be nice to know for any angle really). How do I determine how much of a internal moment there now is at the top of the vertical beam, since some of the load will go through the gusset.

Thanks for your help!

RE: Corner Gusset Effects

I would say the entire load will go through the gusset.

The gusset is likely the stiffest load path, therefore that's the direction it will choose.

RE: Corner Gusset Effects

can you draw FBDs of how the load travels around the structure ?

the beam carries the load in bending until it meets the gusset. Then the diagonal of the gusset would take the load, implying loads in the other sides of the gusset. eventually the load arrives at the (two?) reaction points ...

another day in paradise, or is paradise one day closer ?

RE: Corner Gusset Effects

I came out with the max. moment being in the unloaded beam (i.e. the one without the shear force on it; at the point where where the gusset ends)......and it's magnitude being: Load*the (straight line) distance to the corner (i.e. the 90 degree corner of the gusset) from the point where the shear is applied.

EDIT: My only support location was having the end of the beam (running horizontally) "fixed" on the left hand side.

RE: Corner Gusset Effects

Where are the reactions? The question cannot be answered without knowing their location.

RE: Corner Gusset Effects

You have to make a sketch of the system....supports !!
