Variable speed by changing brush angle motor

Variable speed by changing brush angle motor

Variable speed by changing brush angle motor

(OP)
I am busy with the tooling from a motor i copied its a 220v ac variable speed motor it varies its speed by changing the brush angle.I reduced the original motor diameter size by half for my application, the stator got 13 slots on either side and 8 wires but is only using three one is neutral one live for up to 4000 rpm and a second live for 8000 rpm.
The commentator has more segments than slots on the armature for my motor i found a supplier for a com but it has the some amount of segments as i have slots will this be a problem? The motor has two brushes no wires and is both going straight to earth.I need information regarding the windings of this motor.

you have in your hands one "schragge" motor. These are somewhat expensive and a clever piece of design. I must profess I have never really understood them. Try doing a search under schragge motor. Your nearest technical college or electrical engineering university library will have a good range of literature on these.

May be these have a different name in the northern hemisphere, if so maybe some one up there can add to this thread.

Don

don01 is right, you are talking about SCHRAGE motor.
try to read or consult EASA technical manual.

RE: Variable speed by changing brush angle motor

AM NOT SURE WHAT POWER RATING YOU TALK FOR THIS MOTOR.IF
YU WANT HIGH SPEED MOTORS MAY BE EVEN WITH VARIABLE SPEED
BETTER TO USE UNIVERSAL MOTORS -DIFFERENT POWER RATINGS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET.(LOK AT VARIOUYS TYPES OF MOTORS USED IN VACUUM CLEANERS) .NORMALLY IN UNIVERSAL MOTORS THE THE COMMUTATOR SEGMENTS WILL BE DOUBLE THAT OF ARMATURE SLOTS MAINLY TO MINIMISE ARCING.THE TURNS ARE WOUND TWO TIMES OVER THE SAME SLOT AND EACH TIME IS CONNCETED TO ONE LUG OF THE COMMUTATOR -EFFECTIVELY EQUIVALENT TO SAME NUMBER OF SLOTS AS ARMATURE.
