do all areas of thickend slab on grade considered for bearing?

do all areas of thickend slab on grade considered for bearing?

say I have 15'x15' thickened slab on grade, for soil bearing is 15x15 considered or only the thickened portion?

RE: do all areas of thickend slab on grade considered for bearing?

It sounds like you have a 15'x15' slab with a portion thickened. Am I understanding this correctly? If so, then typically I would only assume the thickened portion for soil bearing. However, if you can reinforce the transition from thickened to standard depth to carry the moment/shear, then you could assume some or all of the area of the 15'x15' slab contributes to bearing. I feel this is going to be highly dependent on the size of the thickened portion relative to the overall size (i.e. it is unlikely that you could get full bearing if the thickened portion is only 3'x3', but more likely if it is 10'x10').

RE: do all areas of thickend slab on grade considered for bearing?

Agree with Badger. In addition to the forces that you would need to address in the non-thickened slab if you counted it, you'd also want to consider how realistic your assumed load distribution assumptions are from a stiffness perspective.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
