Friction hinge question

Friction hinge question

Friction hinge question

(OP)
Dear Eng-tips community,

I have a question about a (presumably simplistic) friction hinge.
The assembly consists of an aluminium tube and an aluminium strip or "arm". The tube will be mounted against a wall. The arm should have complete axial freedom of movement (360°) but also stay fixed when put at an arbitrary angle. The friction of the hinge should be sufficient enough to keep the arm at a certain angle while still being able to position the arm manually. There are no other forces or loads in play. The supposed hinge is the red part in the assembly. (length of the arm is 650mm).

So My question is, is this feasable? if yes, is this (re)produceable in a (cost) efficient way? if yes, which type of materials and fittings would you recommend to start looking at?

English is not my mother-tongue so if you suspect that I am using incorrect terms, please let me know.

Kind regads

RE: Friction hinge question

for hinge why not to use the same material used for car brakes and tolerance with a small interference ?

Thank you for your reply. Yes this material could be an option. I would rather look at some more common and (technical) plastics because of the availabilty and machinability.

RE: Friction hinge question

advice: the red part should have a length twice its diameter

RE: Friction hinge question

Is there something holding the arm and red bushing positively engaged with the cylinder?

A thru bolt with a preload spring and a couple of plastic washers would be secure and provide tension/friction adjustment.
