FBC 2014 CH 23 change

FBC 2014 CH 23 change

FBC 2014 CH 23 change

(OP)
Good afternoon all,

In the latest version of the FBC, Table 2306.2 (1) only includes allowable shear values for 1-1/2” 16 gage staples. However, in previous versions of the FBC, nails (whether 8d or 10d) and staples were included for allowable shear design values for structural diaphragms. My question is: Why? Why did nails get removed from the table? Is there any documentation I can follow that would provide me with nailing capacities? I cannot find anything within the code itself, or any other documentation online to explain the change.

Does anyone have any idea the code officials would do this? I have emailed someone at DBPR but haven't received a response yet.

Below are the two tables

Yes, sorry.

It is also probably good to note, the same tables and values are in the 2009 and 2012 IBC, as I believe the Florida Building Code is based off IBC.

It just doesn't make sense that code officials would only specify staples instead of nails, considering that Miami-Dade County has outlawed staples since Hurricane Andrew.

RE: FBC 2014 CH 23 change

I thought the IBC was trying to avoid double posting items that were found in the specific material codes to avoid potential conflicts. At least that's why I always assumed there were no nailing tables in the IBC. Check out the AWC SDPWS code. It will have the values for nails in there.

A read only pdf of the Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWP) can be downloaded for free from AWC's website at http://www.awc.org/codes-standards/publications. Look in chapter 35 of the FBC to find the appropriate edition.

Thank you all. I received a response from the Florida DBPR.

"Jenna, the said change was made at the national level through the International Code Change process for the 2009 IBC. The reason for the change is that nails values are available from ANSI/AF&PA NDS Supplement for Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS) which is currently adopted by reference in the code."

I guess I didn't see it explicitly in the code, so I didn't realize it was linked to SDPWS.

Thanks again all!

RE: FBC 2014 CH 23 change

JennaP....get familiar with Chapter 35 of the FBC. Every standard listed is included in the code as if it were written in there. Read Chapter 1 of the code and you will see how they are all brought in and how their use is interpreted with respect to the code and potential conflicts between referenced standards and the code itself.
