Old WF Beam section

Old WF Beam section

Old WF Beam section

(OP)
Hi All,

I'm working on a project in a building constructed in the late 1950's. Three beam sections are no long standard sizes. Specifically the following:

8WF17
10WF21
12WF27.

Does anyone have access to the depth, flange width, web thickness, and flange thickness for these sections?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Old WF Beam section

From AISC 7th...

W8x17, d=8, bf=5-1/4, tf=5/16, tw=1/4
W10x21, d=9-7/8, bf=5-3/4, tf=5/16, tw=1/4
W12x27, d=12, bf=6-1/2, tf=3/8, tw=1/4

RE: Old WF Beam section

8WF17
d = 8
bf = 5.25
tf = .308
tw = .23

10WF21
d = 9.90
bf = 5.75
tf = .340
tw = .24

12WF27
d = 11.96
bf = 6.497
tf = .400
tw = .237

Much appreciated. Thank you.

RE: Old WF Beam section

if you are an AISC member, you can download old steel manuals, which define all the shape properties.

RE: Old WF Beam section

Looks like they have discontinued my favorite sizes. Makes me feel old. But then I am.

RE: Old WF Beam section

Us young'uns gotcha covered hokie; 8WF17 is pretty much a W8x18, 10WF21 is a good one (saw a lot of these in mills) but the W10x22 has notably better flexural properties for the low, low cost of 1 plf, and the W12x26 is almost the same flexural properties as 12WF27 but 1 pound lighter.

AISC also offers an Excel spread sheet, for free for everyone, with historic shape information.
