The use of SA-479 bar for pressure parts in ASME VIII Div.2 construction?

The use of SA-479 bar for pressure parts in ASME VIII Div.2 construction?

The use of SA-479 bar for pressure parts in ASME VIII Div.2 construction?

Would SA-479 316 bar would be allowed for the manufacture of small pressure parts (typically 1" NPT couplings) to be used as shell penetrations, welded (set-through) into a new build pressure vessel of ASME VIII Div.2 construction?

I know this material is allowed for ASME VIII Div.1 construction as it is included in Table UHA-23 of Div.1. In terms of Div.2 construction, however, I could not find SA-479 material listed in Table 3-A.1.

Is the intent of para. 3.2.5.2 of Div.2 to permit SA-479 for this type of application?

I am sure this question must have been asked before, but when I searched here I could not find this question asked from the perspective of Div.2 construction.

RE: The use of SA-479 bar for pressure parts in ASME VIII Div.2 construction?

Table 5A is for Div 2 materials and it is listed and allowable stresses are provided so that would imply that is is acceptable material. Note G2 says it is not recommended for flanges and other things where leakage is a possibility (although this may not apply, see below). I would consider SA-182 which is a forging standard if you can live with the slightly less chrome content.

I agree with the interpretation of 3.2.5.3.

I don't feel that Table 3A applies because the scope of 4.16 is for flanged connections and NPT couplings are welded or threaded, and in this case I am assuming you are talking about a threaded connection. (likely for an instrument connection.) I'm not sure if my interpretation is correct.

Thanks for your time taken to respond, jguil.

It is interesting that you say SA-479 316 is listed in Table 5A, because I can not find it listed there. In our 2015 Edition (Customary Units) of ASME II Part D the 316 grades (UNS31600) are listed in Table 5A on page 418, but Bar SA-479 is not listed?

You are correct, I was looking at the 309H.
