Reinforcement on flat head with variable diameters in one opening

Reinforcement on flat head with variable diameters in one opening

(OP)
Hi,
In the reinforcement formula of UG-39(b)(1), how to select the opening diameter, d, if the opening has variable size of diameters, say d1 (smaller) in the upper thickness of flat head, d2 (larger) in the lower which facing the internal pressure side. Do we use average diameter, dv = (d1+d2)/2, or d2 for a conservative design?

Appreciated if any advice.

RE: Reinforcement on flat head with variable diameters in one opening

sxz, on the KISS principle, I'd just use d2.

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

RE: Reinforcement on flat head with variable diameters in one opening

Always take the bigger one, then you're good to go

RE: Reinforcement on flat head with variable diameters in one opening

Yes, you take the larger diameter, but the material between the larger and the smaller diameters can be counted as reinforcing material (it is within the limits of reinforcement). In the end this should be equivalent to taking the average diameter, though not simply (d1+d2)/2, but (d1*t1+d2*t2)/(t1+t2), t1 and t2 being the thicknesses for each diameter.
