Material Selection of Neutralizer Vessels

Material Selection of Neutralizer Vessels

Material Selection of Neutralizer Vessels

(OP)
Gentlemen,

I am looking for a proper material selection for neutralizer vessel (either metallic or non metallic) which handles the spent caustic contains 5% NaOH and 98% H2SO4. There is continuous agitation from top, and pH range of spent caustic is around 12 to 13.5.
which material will best resist in this condition? what is the common material used in such neutralizing vessels? Is there any journals or study papers regarding this? what about an internal coating?

Guide me please!

Coco

RE: Material Selection of Neutralizer Vessels

The size of the vessel is important and has a bearing on the response. Are you talking 20 liters or 500,000 liters

Thanks for your response. I never knew that there is a difference between a small and large size, I am sorry for that anyway.
Here I am talking about both 20 and 500,000 Litres. Now can you please tell me how it differs? [My question is serious, there is no size information, and I am just a starter. I never meant in a wrong way]

And its not a concrete neutralizing tank, I have the below choices in the order of decreasing priority.

1. Carbon steel + Internal coating (I don't know what coating, and needs suggestion-PTFE may be possible, but I am looking for site application)
2. Solid CRA/ clad (I am not sure about the CRAs resistant to these conditions)
3. Non metallic Materials (Polymers)

You are very demanding of free advice from others ..

There are many internal thermoset polymer coatings suitable for a carbon steel tank.

Have you talked with these people ?

Thanks a lot for your response.

I never thought to disrespect anyone by my posts. If felt so, I would be happy to apologize.

I already have good contact with Chemline, and since it demands post curing by baking, I am looking for some other alternatives which is easier for application. I believe neutralizers are not new to a project, but I don't have any test data to back up.

RE: Material Selection of Neutralizer Vessels

Small tanks may be fabricated from plastic and fiberglass. These materials are not suited structurally for a very large tank.

What is the process and the length of exposure?

Epoxy coatings applied over concrete are relatively inexpensive, but will not have an extended service life. Vinyl ester applied over concrete may also be used as a lining. Anchor-Lok embedded Linings are available in Polyethylene (PE), High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (HMWPE), Polypropylene (PP), Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), and Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) and have an extended service life.
