Hi to all,

does exist any AISC required about rolled heavy shape strength reduction as for EN 1993 code (for flange with a thickness > 40 mm)?

AISC provides limit states based on flange and web slenderness

I'm not familiar with the EN 1993 code, but the 1989 AISC Manual of Steel Construction (9th Edition) does not lower allowable bending stress for rolled heavy shapes.

The 1989 allowable bending stress for all rolled steel shapes with either Fy = 36 KSI or Fy = 50 KSI is 0.66Fy for compact shapes and 0.60Fy for non-compact shapes. This 1989 manual has been replaced with newer AISC editions.

Where the EuroCode would have you use a slightly different buckling curve, right? AISC doesn't do that, it uses one curve for everything. I think it ends up being a little conservative in some cases and a little un-conservative in others. But, it makes the code simpler to use....

No reduction in strength that I'm aware of but they make you kick up the quality control and testing a bit for shapes with flanges greater than 2 inch (~50 mm), think it's mainly when you're doing complete joint penetration welds in tensile or flexural members. Don't know if that's related to the reasoning for the reduction in EN 1993, if instead of taking a reduction you bump up the QC to try to preclude the issue instead.
