Fire Protection system needing connection to two water mains?

Fire Protection system needing connection to two water mains?

(OP)
Is there a code section that requires a system to use more than one water main for any reason? Multi story mixed use application with fire pump. I searched through NFPA 13 & 20 and IFC and do not see anything.

Thanks!

RE: Fire Protection system needing connection to two water mains?

If it is a High Rise (75' +), then a second water supply is required. I believe this is in IBC.

I just don't remember where.,.

Found it. IBC 403.3.3.

Thanks!

RE: Fire Protection system needing connection to two water mains?

That provision changed in the 2015 IBC. If the highest occupied story is < 420 feet above the lowest level of FD access, then only one water supply is required.

RE: Fire Protection system needing connection to two water mains?

Stookeyfpe you are confusing two issues, this requirement was not eliminated in 2015 IBC. 403.3.1 does require a building over 420' to have two supplies. However 403.3.3 requires any highrise building in Seismic Design Category C, D, E, or F to have a secondary supply.

RE: Fire Protection system needing connection to two water mains?

I'm not at all confused sir (or miss). The original question asked about a water mains, not secondary water supplies. I understand the difference between the two IFC section.

I stand by my answer based on the revised 2015 IBC section:

[F] 403.3.2 Water supply to required fire pumps. In buildings that are more than 420 feet (128 000 mm) in building height, required fire pumps shall be supplied by connections to no fewer than two water mains located in different streets. Separate supply piping shall be provided between each connection to the water main and the pumps. Each connection and the supply piping between the connection and the pumps shall be sized to supply the flow and pressure required for the pumps to operate.

I did not include the exception.
