Base plate stiffeners

Base plate stiffeners

(OP)
Hi Everyone,

Can someone guide me how to design stiffeners for a base plate. I have done the design of plate in AISC-360 and could not really find the way to design stiffeners.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

GH

RE: Base plate stiffeners

I'd post a sketch of your arrangement as there are several possibilities. In general terms, you'll consider plate shear strength, bending strength, and local buckling strength of any unsupported plate edges in compression. Take care to look at Von Mises stresses to account for shear and bending stress interaction where appropriate. Usually shear stress is the key. Blodgett's book on welded structures is a solid reference.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
