Lap Splice Tolerance for Masonry

Lap Splice Tolerance for Masonry

Anyone know what the tolerance is for lap splice lengths in masonry? ACI 530.1 doesn't appear to list it. It's -1" for all but #14s and #18s in ACI 117, but that's specifically tolerances for concrete construction. ACI 530.1 will kick you to ACI 117 for fabrication tolerances for bar bend diameters, hook tails, etc. but don't know that that covers splice lengths as well.

RE: Lap Splice Tolerance for Masonry

Our copy of ACI 530.1 - section 3.4 B.11 provides for positioning of the bars but not the splice lengths.

ACI 117 suggests a 2" tolerance for "ends of bars" which is the only thing that I see that might overlap with a splice tolerance.
However, ACI 318 deals with f'c >= 2,500 psi so technically 2,000 psi grout may not exactly correspond.

Right. Absent anything else I'd go for the -1" given in 2.2.8 of ACI 117-10, tighter than the 2" you reference. But was kind of hoping someone was aware of something I wasn't.

I can't possibly be the first person to ask this question. Any of the international guys have anything in your codes?

RE: Lap Splice Tolerance for Masonry

I never worry about a tolerance, as I specify the actual lap lengths I want, and include a generous allowance for the likelihood that grouting will be less than perfect.

RE: Lap Splice Tolerance for Masonry

"...and include a generous allowance"

We do that too - usually round up a bit on the lap length just to be sure.
