Hi Pot Testing on 114km long - 138kv Transmission Line

Hi Pot Testing on 114km long - 138kv Transmission Line

(OP)
Hi,

About: Client wants Hi-pot Test on 114km - 138kV Transmission Line

Scenario: Transmission Feeder 1 live
Transmission Feeder 2 new (for testing)
Both Feeders on the same transmission line towers

Equipment: Biddle 70kVDC hi-pot tester

We were trying to perform the test but when we tried to connect the equipment, a strong discharge came from the new feeder line

Now, my question is it :

1. will the induced voltage be safe enough for the equipment if we did cut the new feeder line into 4 parts of 3 - 30km and 1 - 24km lines?
2. doable to perform hi-pot test on the new feeder line?

RE: Hi Pot Testing on 114km long - 138kv Transmission Line

1. No.
2. No.

CAUTION:- There is a high risk of a fatality due to electromagnetic or electrostatic induction. Do not attempt to hipot the line.

Hipot testing is not carried out on transmission lines. Even if you could make it safe, your puny test set only puts out a few mA which will not be enough to raise a voltage on the line due to capacitance and leakage effects. Normally a soak test would be carried out.

Regards
Marmite
