Maybe "New" Hobby - Operating/Repairing a Model "B" Erie Steam Shovel & Stea

(OP)
This past Friday and Saturday I had the pleasure of messing around with some old / historic construction equipment at the Simcoe County Museum north of Barrie, Ontario, Canada, in preparation for and at the 2016 season's "Last Blast."

One of the museum's several partners is the one Canadian chapter of the Historic Construction Equipment Association, which is ideal considering the museum's land holding is 315 acres, much of it in the form of abandoned / disused quarries - which make for an excellent old boys' playground.

Since hopes of my continuing to volunteer aboard an old legacy steamship are rapidly fading away, I've been considering joining up as a volunteer / member with either the museum itself or HCEA Canada, specializing in working on steam equipment, which will involve obtaining a Steam Traction Operator certificate.

Should be fun...

Sounds like a lot of rewarding fun! Go for it!

Yes, if I lived closer to Sacramento (CA) I would probably be volunteering to work at the California State Railroad Museum, if not in the shops, than at least in teh museum itself. I have no formal connection to railroading (I've never worked on one) but I've been a lifelong fan and have been a 'card carrying' member of the CSRM for something close to 20 years.
