I've been asked to set a speed limit on forklifts operating near a steel tank so that if they ran into it, the tank wouldn't be punctured. I'm not sure where to start on this, any input would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Indentation depth

How thick is the tank?
How much does the truck weigh?
How sharp are the forks?
How maniacal are the drivers?

RE: Indentation depth

And is there any risk? Other than just damage?
If so then you need to look up bollard design so that an impact cannot happen.

Don56 - Those are all important questions that I don't know the answer to yet, they are reviewing their records and will get back to me with specs.
EdStainless - I agree, that's one of the recommendations I made, but they want a speed limit.

RE: Indentation depth

A big enough forklift could roll up to a tank at almost zero speed and then push a sharp fork right thru the side. There is no real way to define a "safe" speed limit that will always work- to many variables. protect the tank with substantial bollards or or a moat or something.

It really seems that there is no speed limit that would prevent damage, I'll recommend a bollard system. Thanks all!
