Connecting motor to shredder shaft

Connecting motor to shredder shaft

Connecting motor to shredder shaft

(OP)
Hello,

I have a geared motor producing about 250nm of torque. This has a typical shaft (round with the ridge/lip), which is 25mm.

I then need to connect this to a shredder shaft which is 14mm (this is a round shaft with a flat spot - see attached).

How can i connect the two together?

I saw some HRC couplings, but these seem to be for shafts that have this ridge/lip on both devices.

Any advice how i can connect the two (ideally with some sort slight misalignment protection)?

livecodes,

What is wrong with a flexible coupling? There are all sorts of these things in the catalogues, rated for your torque. The worst case is that you will have to bore one of the holes to the correct diameter.

Thanks for the reply. That could work if I bore it out - good idea

I guess I could remove the ridge part from the shaft. Although could it handle 250nm of torque on a round diameter coupling? Doesn't seem like it has much to grip onto on the shaft and could slip?

RE: Connecting motor to shredder shaft

livecodes,

I am not sure what you mean by "ridge/lip". I see a flat on your shaft. This is for a set screw in your coupling. Set screws dig holes and create burrs in whatever surface they clamp on to. In my experience, set screws fail rather easily. A friction clamp couple with big screws will be way more reliable.

Look through the coupling catalogues. Probably, you can find something with your two shaft bores.

RE: Connecting motor to shredder shaft

That isn't a problem at all. You would be surprise how much torque a 25mm shaft can easily withstand with that type of arrangement. However, the shredder you are hooking up to looks to be the weak link, with only a 14mm shaft I bet the torque input rating is much lower than your geared motor can supply. So you could run into a situation where something gets stuck in the shredder and the power you are putting in just destroys the shredder input shaft.

RE: Connecting motor to shredder shaft

Find a good distributor of industrial components in your area (like Motion Industries or Allied Bearing). They can help you out. Or check McMaster-Carr. (They seem to have everything!) Also contact the coupling manufacturers directly. You will get better information from them.

RE: Connecting motor to shredder shaft

Not sure what you call it in your part of the world - Dodge or Fenner - flexible true type coupling with taper-lok bushes should be more than suitable.

W.M.Berg, Nordex, PIC and Stock Drive Products make all sorts of couplings, with clamp-type shaft connection.
