Minimum width of maintenance access footway in revetment

Minimum width of maintenance access footway in revetment

(OP)
Hello,

My company is installing a maintenance access platform on the underside of a bridge soffit at each abutment. The head clearance needs to be 1.8m, and wedges need cutting out of the revetments to install it.

I am really struggling to find a British Standard or otherwise that identifies the minimum access width of a path to inspect and maintain bridge bearings at the abutments. Can anyone advise from experience if there is such a standard, and if not, what minimum width would need to be accommodated into the design? I need this to understand whether we can just cut a wedge out and achieve the width at the current revetment angles or not.

Cheers,
Dan

RE: Minimum width of maintenance access footway in revetment

I don't know much about British Standards, but around here most maintenance personnel working under a bridge would want at least 48" (1200mm) of clear maintenance platform width from which to operate.
