A2 Hardening Roll Form with Thin Section

A2 Hardening Roll Form with Thin Section

(OP)
Hi, Im trying to make a roll form out of A2 and harden it. I have an older roller that I am trying to recreate that was not hardened at all but the thin center flange has been bending and chipping over the years. I'm wondering if anyone could have any idea to what I would need to harden this roller to without fear of cracking or chipping of the thin flange area. There will be some sideways pressure on the flange from the material that is forming, I would assume no more than 40 lbf sideways. I'm a bit afraid of going over 55 HRC for fear of chipping but some bending is acceptable. The dims in the picture are in inches.

RE: A2 Hardening Roll Form with Thin Section

A2 (or A3) are good options.
Rough machine and then harden. I would temper back to 54-57 range.
Then finish grind. We often re-temper after grinding.
Since these alloys will air quench you will have minimal distortion and little risk of cracking.
