NDT requirements for water piping systems

NDT requirements for water piping systems

NDT requirements for water piping systems

(OP)
Normally it's usual to have 100% RX for underground piping systems containing oil products, 10% RX and 10% PT for aboveground piping systems. But what about firefighting, water and waste water piping systems? Any NDT requirement besides the normal visual inspection?
Also normally I see ITP's for this piping systems with 5 to 10% RX and PT. But there is any requirement on the codes? Mainly B31.3 or even NFPA.

RE: NDT requirements for water piping systems

No, there is no NDT for fire water, water and wastewater piping. Water systems are hydrostatically tested. Wastewater systems are mandrel, leak or vacuum tested.

Public water is generally installed in accordance with AWWA. Public sewers is the ASCE Manual of Practice 60 and the Ten States Standards. The National Fire Protection Association codes shall apply for building piping used for fire protection service.

RE: NDT requirements for water piping systems

For B31.3 systems (and their relative NDT requirements) are determined by the Piping Designer and / or the Owner.
If you have seen 5% or 10% then it is probably Normal Fluid Service.
Water and Wastewater is usually Category D which does not require NDT - only hydrotest.
Firewater can be anything from 5% to 100% but that is an Owners requirement - not a code requirement.

DD

RE: NDT requirements for water piping systems

Thanks, bimr - you have given a good response. About the only thing I could add is that per e.g. AWWA Manual M11 for steel water pipe and special fabricated appurtenances, fittings and special fabrications etc., that and also related AWWA standards C200 for steel water piping, C208 for fab specials, and C206 for field welding of steel water piping(cited by reference e.g. in NFPA standards) all mention etc. several alternate means of NDT e.g. of weld seams (as long as same are produced using section cut from previously hydrostatically tested candidate pipes). The specific standards should be consulted for full descriptions and requirements.

Of course field hydrostatic testing is also intended to be a "non-destructive test" of a fully, well manufactured and installed piping system or segment with most all components in place for the Owner (unless there is damage or defect in the piping or installation same is perhaps generally intended to weed out!)

Thanks Dekdee.
The design code is ASME B31.3.

RE: NDT requirements for water piping systems

As DekDee mentions for B31.3 Normal service is minimum 5% and Category D is visual. Anything over and above is client driven.

Category M is 20% but not relevant.
