3ph 208v Power Supply using a VFD on 230/460 Inverter Duty Baldor Motor

(OP)
Hello,

I have 3ph 208v power supply and am wondering if I can use a VFD that i currently have on a new Baldor motor that is rated 230/460v. Do i need a 208v rated motor or can the drive work with the 230/460v inverter duty motor?

You don't say the size, but as a gross general rule, most SMALL motors rated for 230V will be OK with 208V, Baldor even has a White Paper saying that, defining "small" as 5HP and below (IIRC). But that is predicated on allowances in the motor frame for the added heat. Running on a VFD also adds heat, so I would say either/or, not both.

Instead of changing the motor, I would just get a simple buck-boost transformer ahead of the VFD and put 240V into it.

If you provide a serial number or model number I can tell you if the motor is rated for 208V.

FYI, the paper I was referring to:
http://www.baldor.com/Shared/manuals/pr2525.pdf

The part about 208V on 230V motors is on pdf page 60.

AKA The Cowern Papers. An all-around good reference for motors. lps
