dxf export

dxf export

dxf export

(OP)
Hi all,

I have a problem with dxf export in NX 9.0.3.4 which drives me crazy.

I have a simple model which consist of a part's outline and 'port' which is located a few mm below the outline. There are no solids in the model only curves. Here you can find link an example of the model.

I need to create a dxf file of this part and provide it to a supplier, it should be an easy task but...

The supplier requires that:

1. The dxf needs to be created in 3d so it can be rotated in order to check the orientation of the 'port'.
2. When opened the dxf should be automatically oriented to top view e.g. requested orientation.

The problem is no matter what options I check during dxf export after opening the dxf it is always oriented in isometric view default orientation after loading dxf file.

There is an option Link which should in theory export dxf to a desired view but so far I couldn't get it work.

I would be grateful If someone could help me with this problem.

RE: dxf export

I think it depends only on the import, not export settings. Which CAD system is using by your supplier? If NX, then they probably need to correct their default settings.

I don't know what system is used by the supplier, nevertheless it will not be an easy task to convince them to change their settings. That is why I'm looking for a solution on my end.

RE: dxf export

Have you tried setting the WCS to your desired orientation? Long time ago since I played with this but I think that is what I ended up doing. Or I may have changed the active model view. Like I said, it was a long time ago.

RE: dxf export

Mike is on the right track; you have to change your model view before export. Right click on some empty space in the 3D model view and choose replace view -> top then do the dxf export.

Replacing view did not help :/, dxf loads in isometric view .

RE: dxf export

If you are exporting to 3D space, it seems that you are stuck with the default trimetric view.

One thing that I have noticed: if you use the "selected objects" export option, my dxf viewer (eDrawings) thinks that it is a static 2D view; but if I use the "entire part" option along with the layers option (to output only objects on layer 1, as shown in your screenshots), then the viewer will allow 3D rotation of the exported objects. This seems to be a bug on the export side and should be reported to GTAC.

RE: dxf export

Why not ask the customer how you're supposed to force the orientation? Seems like a reasonable question for what seems to me a ridiculous requirement for a neutral file.

OR

Call GTAC and see what they tell you needs to be done. I called them one time about dealing with inch DXF files and found out all I had to do was edit the DXF file and all was great after that.

That I know of, there isn't a way to directly control the view with any NX options from the export/import dialogs, however, there is a DXFDWG settings file which you may have to edit/copy and possibly add something to force the orientation when the DXF file is exported/imported.

It also might have something to do with the "null" parts to which the dxfdwg.def file points, but I tried changing those and didn't get any different result as far as the orientation was concerned.

Thank you all for your comments.

@Xwheelguy

I completely agree with you that this is a ridiculous requirement but unfortunately for some reason the supplier wants the have the data prepared this way. I could approach the supplier and ask for guidance but I know that will not give much result the communication with this particular supplier is so to say painful :).

I found a workaround which is not perfect but it worked so far. I load the dxf file generated in NX in Catia and then save it once again as dxf. After this operation dxf loads in NX in top view, the downside to this approach is that all curves are projected to one plane so I get a 'flat' dxf.

I try to contact GTAC and see what they have to say.
