Design Code for Basket Strainer

Design Code for Basket Strainer

(OP)
Hi Guys,

I would like to buy a basket strainer. Vendor told me that their basket strainer is designed according to manufacturer standard.

Just want to know any design code requirement for basket strainer using in oil & gas and chemical industries? Like ASME Sec. VIII or ASME B31.3?

Or just a manufacturer standard can be accepted, as long as it meets the process data.
For example, the design pressure and design temperature of the offered basket strainer are 14barg and 66degC respectively.
Whereas the operating pressure and operating temperature are 11.5barg and 35degC respectively.

RE: Design Code for Basket Strainer

Depends on how it's made and what you want.

If it's made wholly from standard piping components, you can argue it is B31.1 or .3 or B31.4/8.

If its got a quick opening closure, they are usually ASME VIII designed, but the rest is B31.3

If its made from odd sized things then often the whole thing is ASME VIII.

Otherwise you're in "unlisted component" territory.

See e.g. section 304.7.2 of B 31.3.

This allows use if the item has basically been proven by long use under similar conditions. So YOU need to be satisfied that this thing designed to the "manufacturer standard" has been used successfully before and that the manufacture and testing is in line with all other components and fittings you are using (e.g. valves, fittings etc)

so just ask the vendor for details of how many he's produced in that size and pressure range...

or buy it from someone willing to state it has been designed to some suitable code.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

LittleInch,

Thank you for the reply.

It is a cast strainer, with CS/SS material.

There is no quick opening closure.

This is a reputable vendor who have been supplying many of this strainer over the world.

They sent me a certificate which certified by ABS.

In the certificate, it mentioned that the strainer meets the requirement of ASTM F1199.

RE: Design Code for Basket Strainer

Where will it be installed? They're may be some regulatory/statutory requirements.

Hi TGS4,

According to local regulation, it is not statutory equipment.
