replacing CMU face shells - shear transfer?

replacing CMU face shells - shear transfer?

replacing CMU face shells - shear transfer?

(OP)
I have an opportunity to help out a contractor friend. Without going too deep into why, they need to remove the face shells from an existing reinforced jamb and replace them with ground-face block (see attached photo). The EOR is concerned that doing so will create a cold joint and prevent compressive stresses from getting into the new masonry. I have analyzed the jambs for a smaller depth of reinforcing and they don't work.

Has anyone done anything like this? Is there an epoxy/adhesive/grout that will provide adequate bond to properly transfer the shear stresses? Plan B is to add a CMU pilaster behind the jamb to take the entire lateral load.

RE: replacing CMU face shells - shear transfer?

I would be concerned about the cold joint and would not trust any type of bonding agent. Pneumatically placed concrete (Shotcrete) could work, but should be attached with steel anchors drilled and epoxied into the existing block fill.

Plan B appeals to me, although I might consider a structural steel member instead of a pilaster.

RE: replacing CMU face shells - shear transfer?

Methyl-metacrylate adhesives reach 3 times the shear strength of concrete at the interface, yet I would rather go for a steel column in the same way that BAretired prefers, and on the same worries.

Welcome back, ishvaaag. Good to see you back again.
