Leg Support Calculation Pressure Vessel Handbook 10th Ed
Leg Support Calculation Pressure Vessel Handbook 10th Ed
(OP)
Hello,
I am working on the design analysis calculation for a vertical vessel that is supported by three leg supports. When looking at the equations provided in Pressure Vessel Handbook the leg supports are located on the heads of the vessels. For the vessel I am performing the calculation for the legs and its wear plate is attached by welding to the cylindrical shell.
I noticed that after the example given in the Pressure Vessel Handbook they provide a sketch that looks like the leg supports that are in the vessel I am looking into. My question is do the leg support equations pertain to both type of leg supports? I am more familiar with saddle support calculations and I am not sure if there might be a different way of approaching the leg supports when welded to the cylindrical shell vice vessel head.
Any insight on the matter is greatly appreciated! Thank you :)

The figure is in the PV Handbook 10th Edition. The figure I am referring to is in the "Stresses in Vessels on Leg Support" section after the example calculations given. This figure shows leg supports that are attached to the cylindrical shell instead of the head of the vessel. My question is, do I use the same equations for both type of leg supports? Or is there a different way I am supposed to calculate the stresses on those type of leg supports?
Thank you for such a quick response!

Bednar has short legs on the shell.
Not sure what Moss has, or which book you're actually referring to.
Note that you can make different assumptions and come up with alternate designs in either case.
