Effective Wind Area ASCE

Effective Wind Area ASCE

Effective Wind Area ASCE

(OP)
I have read many threads on this subject but I am still a little confused.

Say if a have purlins set at a distance of 1.2 m between each other and they are placed on top of girder trusses that are separated 5.0 m. The distance between my roof panel fasteners is 1.0 m.

In this case my effective wind area would be:
  • 1.2 x 1 = 1.2 m2
or
  • 5 x 1 = 5 m2
or
what is my effective wind area. Thank you so much for your help.

RE: Effective Wind Area ASCE

The effective area for the roof panel fasteners is the tributary area of the fastener which is 1.2 x 1 = 1.2m^2

The effective area for the purlins (tributary area) is 5 x 1.2 = 6m^2

Each is considered separately

RE: Effective Wind Area ASCE

I agree with Ron regarding the effective wind area for the fasteners. For the purlins, the effective wind area could be taken as L2/3, where L is the span of the purlins. If I understand the geometry of your situation correctly, that would result in an effective wind area for the purlins as 8.33 m2.
