Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone had any experience of FEA of metric screw threads.

For example 2 engaged threads M50 x 3 Pitch with a force applied to one end.

Looking into failure due the yielding.

Could anyone point me in the direction of any information online as my current searches haven't resulted in much success!

Maybe I wasn't clear enough...

I wasn't asking for any material referring solely to metric threads,

More of a way of trying to explain the type and kind of analysis that I am interested in,

Basically I am looking for any FEA analysis information regarding the failure of engaged threads whether that is Metric, UNC, ACME threads etc.

I imagine the most common analysis' of this type will be regarding the shearing of the thread roots?

do you mean ... make a solid model of the thread, apply the anticipated loads, then because you're not getting the results you see guess what un-anticipated loads may be being applied ?

i've done axisymetric analysis before, it works well and correlates. when you say yielding what do you mean? local yield or gross yiled failure. due to geomtry local stresses are high and there is significant strength remaining it may not be a good crierion

I agree with inline6. I've conducted an axisymettric study several times and it works well. You tend to get high stresses in the root of the thread however, so comparisons with yield have to be relative to the penetration of the high stress, i.e. are they local or gross section
