Concept Design

(OP)
I am a newbie, and a lot of terms are being thrown at me on a design I am doing for flowlines of two wells.

Please how is a concept design different from FEED? And how much detail do I need to go into in Concept design? Do i need to size the lines , detail the valves and fittings needed in concept design or do I just show how the fluid gets to the Processing facility on my P&ID?

RE: Concept Design

You need to ask these questions of the person who asked to do a concept design. His perception of the deliverables may be completely different to what other engineers percieve to be required for a concept design.

Therein lies a whole basket of issues - One mans concept is another mans details design....

Concept should be pretty light on details,

Basically what approx. size, route length, materials, system connection, but not normally a P&ID

FEED nowadays tends to be much more detailed and gets down to P &ID level, sometimes data sheets for main equipment, specifications.

Only the real detail stuff gets left, i.e. isometrics, detailed MTO for every nut and bolt, loop diagrams etc for detail design.

Hence to bridge the gap you often get "Pre-FEED" in between.

Mind you I heard the other day of a "pre-feasibility study" - Thinking about thinking about something....

Generally need to read the scope of work or CTR closely to find out what the party who is paying the bill has included in their definition of concept or FEED.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

Thanks guys for your response

RE: Concept Design

Ask the Project Manager for a copy of a concept design for a similar completed project so that you ascertain what he is expecting to receive.

RE: Concept Design

If you have access to a copy of it, the Piping Handbook (by Mohinder Nayar) has a really good overview section: B1 Hierarchy of Design Documents. It's about a dozen pages and does a nice job of giving an overview of the stages of (piping) design for a newbie.

Good luck!
