Using A2 hardware with a A182 GR316L Flange with ASME B31.3

Using A2 hardware with a A182 GR316L Flange with ASME B31.3

Using A2 hardware with a A182 GR316L Flange with ASME B31.3

Hi everyone.

I'd just like a sanity check if you don't mind.....

I'd specified standard ASME hardware for a 316L flange (A193 Gr B8 class 2 bolts and A194 Gr 8A nuts).

Our purchasing team has asked the question regarding using A2 hardware.

My immediate response was no, for 2 reasons......

As per ASME B16.5, A2 hardware isn't listed as an applicable bolting material in table 1B. You could perform the calculations to prove its mechanical strength as per section 309 in B31.3, but, even if it passes, when using a 316L flange, the hardware should be A4 shouldn't it?

I don't know whether I should stick by my original statement and insist on A193 Gr B8 class 2 bolts and A194 Gr 8A nuts (which makes my life easier but maybe not theirs), or run the tests on A4 hardware......

Any thoughts, experiences or options would be welcomed.

Thank you in advance.

Craig

Craig,

What is A2/A4 hardware?

A2 / A4 hardware are austenitic stainless steel hardware grades to BS EN standards (BS EN ISO 3506). We usually use this hardware for structural purposes - A2 when we are dealing with 304 material, and A4 when dealing with 316 material. I have never used them on pipework before, but, does that mean you can't? ?

Thanks

Craig

I think, it this case A2/A4 are not listed material then...

A2/A4 is your off the shelf fastener for mounting a piece of strut, or whatever simple stuff you need to fasten/support. It's not in the code books and therefore cant be used.
However, if your piping doesnt need to match any ocde (e.g. sound engineering practice under the PED), depending on the application you may consider using it, as theyre probably a lot cheaper than those stainless bars with expensive threads.
