Rebuilding/remanufacturing power breakers

Rebuilding/remanufacturing power breakers

Rebuilding/remanufacturing power breakers

(OP)
Can anyone tell me of a source, a standard or reference, that recommends age or frequency to rebuild power circuit breakers? I need a source to quote to justify the expense. The breakers are over 50 years old and I'd like to rebuild proactively!

RE: Rebuilding/remanufacturing power breakers

The breakers are 480 volt substation distribution breakers. The ones I'm looking at first are GE AK breakers. I try to have them refurbished every 10 years (these are over 50 years old and have never been rebuilt) - but there is some push back due to cost. I need a reference to quote!

RE: Rebuilding/remanufacturing power breakers

It is good that you have been maintaining them over the years so I assume there are modern trip units that have replaced the old ones (EC type?). I'm sure more people will chime in but what are you hoping to accomplish with a complete rebuild? Are you looking at replacing the contacts and arc chutes (contain asbestos) with vacuum bottles? New trip units that have additional features?

First, I want to do a Class I rebuild - disassemble the breaker, replace worn or bad parts, clean, lubricate and reassemble. Over time, breakers experience wear and tear! This will practically return the breaker to new condition. Second, we will install new trip units - the present trips are antique. This will allow for better coordination, and I hope, will allow us to lower AF values! But what I need is reasoning for the total rebuild, other than just experience and I think it is the right thing to do!!!
