PE Exam with Structural Breadth - Codes Required?

PE Exam with Structural Breadth - Codes Required?

PE Exam with Structural Breadth - Codes Required?

(OP)
To those of you who took the civil PE exam with the structural breadth, what code books did you need? I will be buying myself and I want to get only the precise ones that are required.

For example, for the IBC do I only need Volume 2 (code and commentary)? For NDS I have 05 edition, can I just print off changes to 2012? Are AASHTO and ACI 530 and PCI required?

RE: PE Exam with Structural Breadth - Codes Required?

I wouldn't bother with AASHTO or PCI. You definitely want to have the other material codes, including masonry. I doubt you'll need to use the reference values from the NDS to solve any problems, but some of the allowable stresses have changed from 2005 to 2012. The SDPWS might have changes as well, but you likely won't need it. I'd definitely have the most current version of the IBC and ASCE 7-10.

RE: PE Exam with Structural Breadth - Codes Required?

The only reference I didn't bother with was AASHTO due to its expense and we don't deal with bridges at my office. There may have been one question I had to guess due to AASHTO reference. Most of the references are utilized for at least one specific question that you have to look up. Some of that stuff is contained within the CERM though.

RE: PE Exam with Structural Breadth - Codes Required?

I had 2 questions that were quick look-it-up-in-the-code types for PCI. I think I had 1 requiring the AASHTO manual.

Try to have the updated codes. I had a couple questions related to AISC and bolt shear capacities, which were updated in 2010. I'm pretty sure that there were more questions for which the only correct answer required the latest edition.

I second steelslugged answer. You need the 14th edition AISC because they have updated all of the bolt tables.

There have been updates to the masonry code as well.

NDS has new stress values, so you will definitely need that.

Thanks for the replies. Couple more specific questions:

1) Should I specifically get Volume 2 only of the 2012 IBC (since volume 1 is a bit off topic)?

2) Should I get OSHA 1926?

RE: PE Exam with Structural Breadth - Codes Required?

Concerning the IBC, I only brought the structural sections with me to the exam. Chapters 16-24? I think that includes all of the structural chapters. I also brought chapter 15 - roofs - which I think I ended up using. I'm not 100% on that last bit, though. I don't know what volume 1 & 2 means, I've only known the IBC to be the IBC.

Definitely bring OSHA. I had a few look it up style questions there too. Be familiar with the excavations, erection, and general information sections. You can print all the applicable sections from OSHA's website if you have access to free printing. It's a PITA print individual sections, it will save some money.
