Expansion Joint in Long Steel Brick Support Angles

Expansion Joint in Long Steel Brick Support Angles

(OP)
Hello,

We have a project where brick is being hung from a cantilevered floor slab by means of a continuous angle hung from the floor beam. This angle will be approximately 200 feet long. Typically, the erector would weld smaller lengths of angle together to achieve this 200 foot 'continuous' angle. Lately, I've been thinking we need to specify 'expansion' joints in the steel angle to avoid cracking the brick at the corners.

Any thoughts?

RE: Expansion Joint in Long Steel Brick Support Angles

On page 7 of this document it states: " It is not necessary to interrupt shelf angles at vertical expansion
joint locations. However, shelf angles must be discontinuous to provide for their own thermal expansion. A space
of ¼ in. in 20 ft (6 mm in 6 m) of shelf angle length is typically sufficient. "

As JAE noted, I generally use 20' lengths with a gap. A delta T in these environs is often 60degC.
