can i specify WWF for concrete road or should i use #4 bars?

can i specify WWF for concrete road or should i use #4 bars?

(OP)
I have a goby standard from our company for concrete road that uses WWF as reinforcement.
this is for a private road.
I'm looking at "public" concrete road standards I got online and they mainly use #4 or #5, etc.. instead of wwf.

is wwf still ok?

RE: can i specify WWF for concrete road or should i use #4 bars?

For exterior pavements we sometimes see NO reinforcement - for a lot of highways in the midwest USA they use unreinforced concrete with dowels at all the pavement joints.

Agree with JAE....usually reinforcement not needed.

RE: can i specify WWF for concrete road or should i use #4 bars?

You can absolutely use WWF.

RE: can i specify WWF for concrete road or should i use #4 bars?

I never use WWF. If it needs rebar, use rebar. Otherwise design it as plain concrete. The wire almost always ends up on the bottom where it does no good except to hold the chunks together during demolition.

RE: can i specify WWF for concrete road or should i use #4 bars?

Ditto what JAE said. Although, sometimes NYSDOT will used a reinforced pavement using 6x12-W8xW5.

RE: can i specify WWF for concrete road or should i use #4 bars?

you've got
  • jointed plain concrete
  • continuously reinforced concrete
  • and jointed reinforced concrete
your choice will be a function of your design criteria and also local conditions and practice. If you can, go with plain concrete as it is generally cheaper and just as reliable if constructed properly.
My opinion of WWF for roads is that yes, you can do it and it will likely be a waste of money. Use bars instead.
