Flange load
Flange load
(OP)
Dear Experts:
Need your advice:
On top of a 1000 gallon vessel, there is a 8" 150 lbs SORF flange
I'm planning to install a 6" rotary airlock valve with an approximate weight of 300 lbs
Questions : Can the 8" flange take the load of the rotary valve or do I need additional support?
Thanks

RE: Flange load
The vessel on the other hand...... That's where your issue lies and is not possible to guess these things, but needs proper calculation and analysis. "Vessel" could be anything from a steel tank made of 1/8" plate to a pressure vessel made from 1" thick steel.
Is this horizontal or vertical?
How are you mounting a 6" valve on an 8" nozzle?
what is the current re-inforcement or attachment detail of your ("slip on?) flange onto the vessel?

Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.
RE: Flange load
The vessel is vertical
I'm finding out the thickness and also in touch with the tank vendor for confirming the load
There is no re-inforcement for the 8" flange
my plan is to fabricate a transition spool piece to mate 6" valve to 8" valve

RE: Flange load
Is the vessel being re-used ? What was the original purpose of the nozzle ?
Can you take a couple of pictures of the nozzle and post them ?
Is the vessel a "pressure vessel" designed to one of the pressure vessel codes ? If so, what is the design pressure and materials ?

RE: Flange load
What diameter vessel, what wall thickness?
What is the angle of the nozzle centerline? Straight up? Out at a 90 deg? Angled from the PV head?
Is the weight centered on the nozzle (what is length of weight CG from the vessel wall?)
