Unsupported length of compression flange in a steel structure

Unsupported length of compression flange in a steel structure

Unsupported length of compression flange in a steel structure

(OP)
The picture attached shows a pipe rack, Braced in the longitudinal direction, moment connected along the transverse direction.
The strut connected along the longitudinal is of fin plate shear connection, where a plate is welded to the web of column.
The pipe rack is subjected to wind load along transverse and longitudinal direction (both positive and negative)
What is the unsupported length of the column?

Answer 1 :Full height of the column(level one l level 2) since the compression flange is not restrained as stiffeners are not available to connect the top and bottom flange.

Answer 2 : Height at each level, since the stiffener in the web will not allow the compression flange to buckle.

Each level.

RE: Unsupported length of compression flange in a steel structure

I would use a variant of this detail and call it braced each level.

Not a fan of shear_tab_to_web detail... Im sure a bunch of people use it with succes everywhere, but in my area, ive never seen it used in industrial building
