2x2000 MCM vs 3x1590 MCM - Constructability

2x2000 MCM vs 3x1590 MCM - Constructability

(OP)
Hi Everyone,

I am designing a 240kV AIS substation for a utility client. Their standards and specifications specify a bus rating of 3000A. For flexible jumpers, I specified 2x2000 MCM ASC conductors to satisfy the ampacity rating. The client came back and told us not to use 2000 MCM conductors due to constructability issues. Apparently those conductors and too thick to easily bend and cause issues while installing shorter jumpers. After that comment, we have decided to go with 3x1590 MCM conductors but are having issues finding the right parts.

My question is:
In terms of constructability, will it be easier to install 3x1590 MCM conductors instead of 2x2000 MCM. Can anybody speak from their construction/design experience?

RE: 2x2000 MCM vs 3x1590 MCM - Constructability

I can see issues finding substation fittings for the 3 conductor versus the more common 2 conductor. I've seen many issues with the bend radius on larger MCM wire in distribution installations, but it would seem like 240 kV equipment would typically have spacing that doesn't require any sharp bends.

RE: 2x2000 MCM vs 3x1590 MCM - Constructability

3000 Amps on two 2000 MCM cables implies 90 degree rating.
1000 MCM is rated at 1055 Amps at 90 degrees. It is a common size and there is a lot of hardware available.
